Southport CARES for children

Coalition Against Removal of kids Emergency & other Services

Wind of Change protest against hospital cuts 15th August 2004

Welcome to the official & original  CARES website for the campaign to restore children's A&E, children's ward & maternity services back to Southport Hospital.

Our campaign started when the NHS Trust decided to relocate our vital services for children and pregnant women to Ormskirk. This unbelievable decision is we believe totally unacceptable,  highly  dangerous to the patients involved and distressing to families in general. Southport is a large town built on the holiday industry which urgently needs these essential hospital services for visitors as well as the residents herein.

To date we have received 18,532 names on petitions which were presented to bosses from the NHS following a massive protest march (Sunday 17th August 03) at Southport Hospital. An estimated 3-4 thousand protesters took part in this historical march to show the Trust just how strong public disgust was against these highly unpopular and autocratic changes. These petitions were presented to number 10 Downing Street by CARES on Thursday 19th February 2004.

CARES response to unwarranted allegations (incorporating public health concern letters)

NB. CARES is the 'original' parental concern campaign group and not
part of any splinter faction or political organisation.

This sign situated outside Southport's own hospital says it all.

'Adults only' are permitted and children are forced to travel to another 'smaller' town in another county for emergency treatment.

Perhaps the NHS should change their most recent sign as below..........

To something like this????

“If your child, or your mother was in pain and the means to relieve it quicker were available free at the point of need. would you refuse them it? I wouldn't.  And if I wouldn't refuse that relief to my family, then I'm not going to refuse it to any other family in this country.”

Extract from a speech by the Health Secretary, John Reid, to the 2003 Labour party conference in Bournemouth.

So what went wrong with Mr Reid’s lofty promise – how come the children of Southport and Formby missed out?
