Southport CARES for children
Friday, 21 October 2005
Open letter to the Southport Press regarding controversy surrounding First Birth claims.
It has come to light whilst recently liaising with Health chiefs that different parties have been laying claim to having the first birth option brought back to Southport.
Southport MP John Pugh’s political website states:
Quote John Pugh MP website:
"Save our Services campaigners have already persuaded the local hospital trust to re-instate first births for Southport mums in the town."

Yet Mark Winstanley of the PCT states:
“It was always the intention to allow first births (for women without expected complications) at the Midwifery-led Unit.”

At a recent CARES meeting attended by Jonathon Parry and Jeanette Brookes, Mr Parry has been reported to have said that the First births had not been installed at Southport initially on the recommendation from Bournemouth NHS. If a mother had needed to be transferred to Ormskirk in first few months of MLU, it would have killed any hope of MLU staying open when that appeared on front page of local press; afterwards Jonathan Parry told a gentleman that John Pugh had known this all along.
According to Mr Parry, John Pugh had nevertheless issued a press release claiming he had influenced the decision to keep first births at Southport when he knew this was untrue. Jonathan Parry and Jeanette Brookes were "Absolutely bloody furious" that John Pugh had made this claim. It is assumed they have said nothing about this publicly as they are hospital managers and not politicians.
Our MP is there to work for his/her constituents and gets paid to do so.
The Health Chiefs in our town are there to look after the needs of their patients and they are also paid to do so.
SOMEBODY is not being true to their trusted position and needs to be exposed.
As the Midwife Led Unit is not currently operational, this, you may think, is not an important subject but in fact it is!
Whichever representative who is fostering untruths in this matter blatantly cannot be trusted by CARES or the residents of our town and they are paid by the taxpayer to serve the community at large.
CARES request that the Southport press pursue the vital question:
Who exactly is telling the truth and who is not?
